Guilt or Shame

Guilt says I did something wrong
Shame says there is something wrong with me

Where do we fit in this?

  1. Spot on RJ. Shame is a learned behavior that is rooted in our early childhood development. Psycho socially in potty training (Erkison's Autonomy versus shame and doubt) occurs at ages 2-3. Guilt is another learned behavior that is also rooted in childhood (Erikson's initiative versus Guilt and shame) occurs at 3-5. Given our present societal track record at ineffective parenting, it's no surprise that we are a society plagued with issues of shame and guilt.
